How to Wear Stripes on Stripes
Two divergent scenes come to mind when I think of sailing. First, I think of the competitive sport in which athletes learn to harness the wind and master the tactics of racing. Second, I think of the stereotype most people picture when I tell them I grew up competing in the sport: a crew of people wearing sailor hats, neck scarves, and white pants. While I don't mean to carry on this misconception, I couldn't help but pull out my white pants and a striped sweater for a leisurely sail on Lake Michigan.
This colorful sweater by Free People originally came in a two piece set, but I decided to pair it wide leg pants by the same label instead. The key to wearing stripes on stripes is to mix prints with complementary colors and contrasting sizes. The sweater's thick horizontal stripes stand out against the pants' narrow vertical ones. Though stripes are always around, the trend is back in a big way for 2017. From thin pinstripes to bold colorful ones, something about the classic print evokes an essence of nostalgic sophistication.
